Woman after a mommy makeover. (Model)

What does mommy makeover recovery look like week by week? Most patients are ready to return to light daily activities and sedentary work within 2 to 3 weeks. Swelling in liposuctioned areas can take 4 to 6 weeks to fully subside, and if breast augmentation is part of your procedure, the breasts typically settle into their final shape over 3 to 4 months. Your exact timeline depends on which procedures are combined and how closely you follow your postoperative instructions.

Knowing what to expect at each stage makes the process a lot less stressful. Here’s a week-by-week breakdown of what I share with my patients to help them feel prepared. You can learn some tips for a smoother recovery in our related blog post.

The First 72 Hours: Rest Is Your Only Job

The first 3 days are straightforward: rest, hydrate, and let the people around you help. Things to expect during this window include:

  • Developing swelling and bruising in all treated areas.
  • Feeling tightness or pressure in the midsection, particularly after a tummy tuck.
  • Wearing a compression garment to support healing and reduce swelling.
  • Managing discomfort with prescription medication.

Having a trusted adult with you for at least the first 48 to 72 hours is essential, especially if you have young children at home. Set up your recovery space before surgery so everything you need is within easy reach.

Week 1: Discomfort, Early Healing, and Your First Follow-Up

Swelling and bruising often peak around days 3 to 5 before gradually improving. Fatigue is real during this phase, even when you feel like you’re just resting. Your first postoperative appointment typically happens this week. We’ll check your incisions, monitor healing, and remove drains if applicable.

One thing that surprises many patients: gentle movement is encouraged. Short, slow walks starting on the first day or two promote circulation and help reduce the risk of blood clots.

Weeks 2 and 3: Turning the Corner

This is when most patients start to feel like themselves again. Bruising fades, swelling softens, and that first-week exhaustion gives way to something much more manageable. By around day 10, many patients are genuinely surprised by how different they feel compared to day 4. Many patients can resume daily activities and sedentary jobs during this phase.

Incision care becomes part of your daily routine, and consistency matters. Keeping incisions clean, avoiding sun exposure, and following your recommended aftercare closely lay the foundation for how your scars heal over the long term.

Weeks 4 to 6: Easing Back Into Life

Most visible bruising has resolved, and swelling continues to improve. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Exercise is restricted for most patients until at least week 6, especially after a tummy tuck.
  • Lifting restrictions remain in place, particularly if your procedure included abdominal muscle repair.
  • Swelling can still fluctuate, often becoming more noticeable at the end of the day.

Emotional ups and downs during this phase are also completely normal. Give yourself grace; some days will feel more difficult than others.

One of the questions we hear most often is: When can I get back to normal? The short answer is that it depends on the activity and your individual healing. Here’s a general guide to help set expectations.

Table comparing activities and approximate timelines of when a post-op Mommy Makeover patient can resume them.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines. Your surgeon will always have the final word based on how your healing is progressing.

Months 2 and 3 and Beyond: Watching Your Results Come Together

Residual swelling from liposuction continues to resolve through months 2 and 3. If breast implants with or without a breast lift were part of your makeover, they typically take 3 to 4 months to fully settle—meaning the shape you see at week 6 is still evolving. Scars are maturing during this time as well, and consistent care helps them continue to flatten and fade.

Most patients receive clearance to return to regular exercise around the 3-month mark. Many patients tell us their post-surgery results look better than their pre-baby bodies.
